Kittson profiles and photos from the past and present

Hello! I'm very interested in finding an old historic grain elevator supposedly near Humboldt: http://ning.it/OJl4bu I'm from southern Minnesota and would like to drive up to visit it. Does anybody know where exactly it is??

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you!

Welcome to our web page Samuel. I can recall seeing this barn and elevator in Humboldt on the western edge of this very small town, but I have not seen it recently.
I have some friends that live in Humboldt near the barn/elevator and I phoned them to find out if it is still standing but they are not home. I will try and contact someone who lives there and confirm it is still standing and get back to you.

I have just checked Google Maps and the barn/elevator can be seen in the photo.  Go to Google maps and type in Humboldt, Mn.

When the map opens it will show you the layout of this small town.  Note that the main highway #75 runs to the Northwest.  County road #6 runs from east to west.  From the interesection of #75 and #6, go west on #6 and you will notice six round grain bins on the west side of town.  If you look carefully you will see the barn/elevator a short distance to the right or East.  I would appear it is still standing.

If you are familiar with how Google maps works, keep enlarging the map so you get closer and closer.  When you have clicked it the last time it should switch over to the street view. If you click on the road you will see a white circle appears.  Start at the junction and put the white circle right in the middle of #6 and the railway tracks.  If you look to the north west you should be able to see the barn and the elevator behind it.

So it appears it is still standing since this is a recent photo.  I hope this helps.  If you have any further questions let me know.

Hi Glenn!

Sorry for my tardy reply. This is tremendously helpful -- I was able to find it on Google streetview just as you described! I am very excited to see this interesting structure in person, and it will be thanks to your assistance.

Do you happen to know who owns the structure? I am scouting potential locations for a feature film I would like to make, and I would be interested in doing a short scene in front of the structure.
Thoughts?

Much obliged, Glenn.

Sam

Sam, I had an opportunity to pass through Humboldt recently and I stopped and obtained a few more photogaphs. I learned that this was originally a horse barn owned by the James J. Hill farm. He owned a huge farm in this area of the county and the main house (still standing) sits near Northcote, Minnesota. In the later part of the barn's life it was made into a grain storage building and the walls were re-enforced by special bracing.  A Mr. Wilwant of Pembina, N.D. presently owns the barn and the land it sits on. The property is up for sale and might be purchased by a farmer in Humboldt.

I have posted a few photos of the barn in the photo section of this web page.
