TIME LINE - list creation.

Genealogy involves searching for family members who died before we were born. When we add new names to our family tree we are usually left wondering how they lived and what events shaped their lives and experiences. The times they lived in were shaped by major world events as well as local trials and tribulations. In an effort to better understand our ancestors, we are going to create what is called a “Time Line”. The plan is to make up a list of events that effected and influenced the lives of people who lived in Kittson County during the last 150 years or so.

We need help creating this list. The easy items were things like World War I and II and the Korean War. But how about Floods, Fires, and other Disasters. If you can remember hearing about a situation that effected your parents and grandparents as well as friends and neighbors lets us hear about it. Give us what information you can and we can search through the records and try to come up with exact dates and maybe some more facts. The list will be organized by the dates, along with the details. When you know the dates between when your family members were born and died you can check the Time Line and discover the events that had a hand in shaping who they were. This is going to be an on going process while we flesh out the dates and information. At some point we will create a Group called Time Line but for now this forum will be a work in progress.

Keep in mind the event should be something that effected more than just the lives of one or two persons.

We are not interested in when Uncle Ole rolled his pick-up or when granny set fire to the kitchen while making dandelion wine. (Sorry granny)

Wow--in reading through the time line--I can't believe all the towns or post offices that once were in Kittson County and are now non-existant. What a shame that so many places have fallen by the wayside through the years.

It appears that nothing has been added to this timeline since 2010 or is it now in a different place? I have always wondered why my great-grandparents would take their 2 boys (John & Charles Edkins) and move to Fond du Lac, WI. I know it happened after 1901, but have not figured out when they made the move. I was hoping to find something in the timeline.

My great great grandmother's cousin was Arthur William Shaleen, who became Hallock's doctor in around 1905-7, after graduating from the University of Minnesota Medical School. He practiced in Hallock for 40 years before retiring, with a couple of years out as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps 1917 - 1919 and two years from 1910 to 1911 he spent in further study of medicine in Vienna and Berlin. He lived in a room above the Farmer's Store and had his office and consulting room above the jeweller's. He was instrumental in getting a hospital built in Hallock (believe it was completed in 1922). After retirement he donated his personal library of over 1000 books to the newly built Hallock Public Library. He must have been an imposing figure -- he gives his height on his 1910 passport application as 6'10". I wonder whether there are any photos of him, his wife, or of his medical practice. The only photo I have is from the University of Minnesota Gopher Yearbook for 1902 when he started his study of medicine.
