Kittson profiles and photos from the past and present

Anna Charlotta Engdal was born 18 January 1864 to Jonas Magnus (Jonasson) Engdal and Hedvig Sophia Johansdotter in Åseda, Kronobergs, Sweden.   She departed Göteborg October 5, 1889 and identified her destination as Hallock, Minnesota.  On March 2, 1892 her daughter, Hilma Viktoria left Stödsboda, Kronobergs, Sweden to join her mother.

Upon arrival, Anna Charlotta married Charles August Ryden (born 8 June 1859). They are listed in the 1900 census as:

  • Tegner, Kittson, MN
  • Ryden, Charles, age 40
  • Ryden, Anna, age 36
  • Hilma V, age 14

And in 1920:

  • Kennedy, Kittson, MN
  • Ryden, Chalres August, age 60
  • Ryden, Anna Charlotta, age 55

Anna Charlotta had two other siblings who immigrated:

  1. Erland Gustaf, born 12 September 1866, arrived 1889, lived and died in Jamestown, New York.  He changed his name to Erland Jones after arrival.
  2. Jonas Viktor, born 28 March 1869, arrived 1887, lived in both Gallatin and Madison counties, Montana, died 28 July 1944 and is buried in Pony, Madison County, Montana.  He changed his name to Victor Jones...and is my great-grandfather.

Anna Charlotta's father was in the Swedish Army.  Born to Jonas (Jonasson) Blad (also in the army and using the military surname "Blad"), Jonas took the military surname "Engdal".  Historical records of this family have been found with both the Engdal and Jonasson surnames.

The Engdal (Jonasson) family lived in the farm village of Ekholma, within Åseda township. By  1887 they were living in Stödsboda.
