Ulster Pelans

By way of introduction, I am conducting a one-name study of all people called Pelan - particularly those from the province of Ulster in the island of Ireland. I believe Charles H Pelan was the son of one such Ulsterman.

Charles is mentioned in a number of texts - the earliest that I know of is "Minnesota Place Names, A Geographical Encyclopedia" (1920) by Warren Upham. Some texts describe him as an "Englishman" although it appears his heritage was Irish and that he was born in Iowa.

The image of Charles' headstone is (c) LeRoy Amacher, who has kindly given permission for its use. The grave is in Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque County, Iowa.

This was taken from the Pelan Advocate Newspaper from about 1903 and confirms that Pelan Township and town was named after Charles H. Pelan
