LANCASTER - 1939

The photo was taken from the grain elevator looking south west at the main street of town..
How many of the buildings can you identify. The old city hall is obvious. Doc Hoffman's office, and the grocery store are easy, how about the rest?
The original photo was very wide so it has been scanned in three sections. This is the center section and the other photos will follow.

During that era and well into the 1940s, the Superintendent was accorded great respect and I remember hearing adults refer to the Superintendent as The Professor.

Program from the Baccalaureate Services and Commencement Exercises, Lancaster High School, Class of 1941.  The former was held at the Sion Lutheran Church on Sunday, May 25 at 11:15 AM while the latter was held at the City Hall on Thursday, May 29, at 8:00 PM. It would be meet and right if the Commencement Address entitled "Thinking Straight in a Crooked World" would be repeated today.

Health care in 1939.  A statement from the Kittson War Veterans Memorial Hospital Association located in Hallock, Minnesota.  It is dated June 4, 1939 and the patient is my Aunt Eunice Elaine Smolak, daughter of George Francis and Mary Florence Larter Smolak.  She was hospitalized for 27 days due to complications from an appendectomy.

In the picture of the girls basketball team, my Mother was on the left - Helen Pearson.  I know she was a good friend of  Edythe Smolak as I've seen her named in some of my Mom's pics.  I'll look around for them for you.
