Hi Marie, Thanks for joining the Kittson Historian. I have posted a blog pertaining to Thomas Murray that you might find interesting. I know of a number of Murray people who once lived in the town of Lancaster, which is also in Kittson County. If you have any questions, just reply to the blog.  Glenn Browne

Hello Marie,

I just found this group and the Thomas Murray thread today and have joined the Kittson County Historical Society in order to contact you, and Glenn Browne, who has done so much research on behalf of the Murray family. Isabella Murray (nee McIver) is our common ancestor. She was my great-great grandmother. Before she married Donald Murray, Isabella had a child out of wedlock in 1852, a year after she and her parents had emigrated from the Isle of Lewis to the Eastern Townships in Quebec. The child she bore was a little girl named Catherine, known as Catherine McIver. She was raised by her grandparents, Donald and Mary. We have no idea who Catherine's father was. When Catherine grew up, she married Charles Ward Bailey French as his second wife, following the death of his first wife. Catherine and Charles had my grandmother in 1898, Annie Catherine Eliza French.

Isabella, who died suddenly on December 29, 1903, as per her funeral notice so kindly found and posted by Glenn Browne, was visiting family in Canada at the time. What the funeral notice doesn't say - but I can tell you - is that Isabella was visiting her eldest daughter Catherine at the time. Two years later, in 1905, Catherine's husband Charles died, and Catherine took her two young daughters, including my grandmother (age 7) to live with the Murrays in Hallock for a few years. Later, they returned to the Eastern Townships where Catherine lived for the rest of her life, dying in 1933.

It was very exciting for me - as it must have been for you - to see the photo of Isabella and Donald Murray. I have a photo of Catherine McIver French, and she looks very much like her mother, although not as tiny!

I see that you live in Calgary, and it seems that a whole lot of family live in southern Alberta. By sheer coincidence, so do I!! Although I am away for the next few months - but as it happens, I am near the Eastern Townships and so was able to spend a few days there this past week, seeking out family history. I found Donald McIver's grave - Isabella's father's grave, which was very exciting. However, there is still much work to do on the family tree, and so the quest continues.

Hello Marie -

Yes, this IS exciting!! Puzzles are always easier to solve in teams, and I am very pleased to connect with another descendant of the McIvers. I would so much like to learn more about Isabella's life in Hallock, and what she was like - and it's also possible that Murray descendants may have information or memories (perhaps contained in letters or photographs or memoirs) that include my great-grandmother Catherine, who as I say, moved to Hallock (or Humboldt as we always heard it) with my grandmother Annie and great-aunt Lottie in 1905 for a few years.

We seem to have more in common than family however - and this amazes me. I work in Waterton and have taken a leave of absence from my job for several months, but will return to Pincher (and work) in the fall sometime. You will - I am sure - know a friend of mine, Beth Towe. Perhaps she has your direct email address and we can connect that way, which may allow for easier transmission of the information/documents you mention, as well as anything I have that you might find of interest.

The second (or rather, the third!) point of connection is that I moved to Pincher/Waterton from Vancouver Island, where I lived for 17 years. I lived in both Victoria and Ucluelet at different times. I'm going to take a wild guess and assume that like many Calgarians, you have moved to the Comox Valley - a beautiful area.

I envy you your trip to Scotland this fall - I believe you said in one of the Thomas Murray comments that you were going to the Isle of Lewis, which would now be a few years ago. Are you making a return visit to Lewis or are you going elsewhere in Scotland? I certainly look forward to hearing more. :-)

All the best, Marie - it's a great pleasure to meet you. The joy of the internet!

Hi Marie,

I look forward to combining forces more closely on our mutual McIver Quest! I've also heard via the grapevine that you were, with Beth Towe, one of the organizers of the two Waterton festivals. Very interesting - and how amazing to have two connections like this - family and Waterton! :-)

I may have your email address - Dianne's email to me was forwarded from you, so I will email you via that route - then you'll have my address too.

Cheers,

Mary
