Kittson County Historical Society

Kittson profiles and photos from the past and present

Hi everyone!  My name is Julie Johnson and I am a new member of the Kittson County Historical Society.  I live in Minneapolis and make frequent trips to the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul, so if anyone has something they would like me to look up and e-mail to them, I would be happy to try to help.  I am researching two Kittson families:  The Erik Billing(s) family who came from Sweden in 1905 and settled in Kittson, and the Charles O. Erickson family, who first settled in Minneapolis and moved to Kittson around 1916.  If you are a family member, I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Julie, thanks for joining and your offer to help.

We have records of twenty-six (26) different Billings in our records.  Eric was born  11 Nov 1868 and died 1 Sept 1951. He was married to Lucille (Lucia) Olson, born 17 Mar 187, died 2 Aug 1946.

The had ten children and we have records on most of them.  Do you have any specific questions about the family.

Hi Julie,  We have a great deal of records on Ericksons but I am unable to locate a Charles O. Erickson.  If you could give me some birth and death dates or a spouse name I could check further.

Hi Glenn,

You have the correct Billings, with Erik and Lucia and their children.  I  have a lot of information on them (thanks primarily to telephone conversations Lucille Yon Pier and her writings contained in Volume II of the Kittson County History).  They came to Kittson County in 1905.

Charles Olaf  (C.O.) and Catherine Erickson moved from St. Louis Park/Minneapolis to Kittson County in 1910 along with six children.  For two years they lived in a log cabin and then moved to a house.  Charles was diagnosed with cancer in 1914 and moved back to Minneapolis for treatment.  Catherine stayed in Kittson County with the children.  In 1917 Charles died, and in 1918 Catherine and the family moved back to Minneapolis.  There is reference to the children attending a one room schoolhouse, so if I can determine where they were living I can find which school they attended.  Thanks for your response, Glenn.

Julie, next time you will be visiting MHS, let me know.  I do have a request, but I'll tell you in a private email...
