This is an old map of Lancaster about the 1940's that I have copied for you Georgine. The X in a circle shows the approximate location of the house where your mother was born. I have also marked the down town area and the school as a reference. If you have any questions let me know.

Interior of the Lancaster Mercantile Company, circa 1918.  The original company was owned by Claus Lindblom and C. E. Swenson, with the latter being the store manager.  Employees pictured L-R: unknown, Marie Gallaway, unknown, George Smolak.  The business was later known as C. E. Swenson's Store and eventually Sanner's Store, owned and operated by Floyd and Glenn Sanner.

Lancaster High School Thespians displayed their acting talents with their production of "The Headless Phantom."  The play was presented at the city hall, also known in that era as The Hub Theater.  Pictured is one of the cast members, Eunice Smolak, class of 1941. I have often wondered if my aunt Eunice had any lines to memorize.

Lancaster School District No. 74 school portrait.  This is the first Lancaster public school, established in 1905.  By 1918, increasing enrollment lead to the planning for a new school building.  In 1919, the frame building was sold to Gottfried Wass for $950.00.  The new school building was dedicated in 1920.  The photo is a postcard which had been addressed to my grandmother,  Mrs. George (Mary Larter) Smolak, Lancaster, Minn.  However, there is no evidence that postage was affixed.  Someone in the family used a ball point pen and circled some of the children.  Idn the front row, extreme right, is Arthur Ambrose Larter b. 1903 the son of Frederick Adophus and Mary Ann Jenkins Larter.  Second row, second from the left, is Marguerite Larter, b. 1905, the daughter of Ambrose James and Elizabeth Wagner Larter.  Second row, ninth from the left, wearing a white shirt, neckerchief, and light colored hat, is Maurice R. H.  Cory b. 1904 the son of Reuben Henry and Hettie May Larter Cory.  In the back row, fifth from the left, dressed in a white dress, is Lorraine Cory, b. 1899, the daughter of Reuben Henry and Hettie May Larter Cory.  Standing down from Lorraine Cory to the viewer's left, the girl dressed in black and wearing a black hat is Helen Lockwood.  According to the booklet published for the Lancaster All School Reunion held in 1995, Helen Lockwood graduated from Lancaster High School in 1921.  The date of the photo is estimated to be circa 1915.

The drama department of Lancaster High School is shown in another production although the title of the play remains an unsolved mystery.  Many of the cast members shown graduated with the class of 1941.  First row, second person from the left is Florence Singler; fourth person from the left is Vivian Uppman and standing behind Vivian to her left is Eunice Smolak.

Lancaster High School Prom, class of 1941, Eunice Smolak.  I attended the school from 1943 to 1949.  As I recall, most of the proms were held in the library on the third floor.  During the winter months, a movie would be shown in the library during our lunch hour.  I think we paid maybe five or ten cents to attend the screenings.  They were serial westerns and every episode ended with some horrible disaster about to befall the hero or heroine.  Of course, the next episode began with a brief retelling of the ending of the last thrilling chapter lest we had all forgotten how exciting it was.
